Cooperative Abundance

What is Cooperative Abundance?

According to Robin Wall Kimmerer, cooperative abundance is a system of interconnected relationships, like a gift economy, where wealth is understood as having enough to share, not to accumulate. In such an economy, the emphasis shifts from individual hoarding to mutual flourishing through reciprocity, gratitude, and interdependence. Instead of a competitive focus on scarcity, it promotes a mindset that there is enough for all, fostering a more fulfilling and sustainable way of living.

Key Aspects of Cooperative Abundance

  • Gift Economy: Rather than a market-driven economy, cooperative abundance operates as a gift economy where generosity and giving are the primary forms of exchange.
  • Reciprocity and Gratitude: The exchange of gifts creates a cycle of giving and receiving, fueled by gratitude and a deep sense of interdependence among people and with the natural world.
  • Mindset of Enoughness: It fosters a belief that resources are sufficient for all, countering a consumerist culture that emphasizes constant consumption and acquisition.
  • Community Focus: The "economic unit" is the "we" rather than the "I," as the prosperity and well-being of the entire community are seen as the ultimate goal.
  • Biomimicry: Kimmerer draws inspiration from natural ecosystems, like the serviceberry tree, which share their fruit and nectar to support the entire system rather than hoarding their resources.
  • Purpose-Driven Life: Engaging in cooperative abundance allows for a life of purpose and connection, as giving and contributing to the community become sources of fulfillment and empowerment.
