In short:
I create short stories, photographs, masks and jewelry to reflect my deep desire to connect with different parts of myself, in order to make me whole again and heal. In that process of healing, I wish to connect with others who are also in that process of healing. How do personal stories of hardship, bullying, and challenges with mental illness speak to the power of the self to heal, to create within itself, the very seeds of healing? How do we as human beings survive trauma? How can we celebrate the beauty of difference and the gems that get revealed through our fractured identities?
In the Broken Mirror Project, I explore into fractured identity through making objects, photography and storytelling. It is a story of resilience in the face of trauma that will culminate in a book and a performance. This is an investigation of how trauma creates what is necessary for survival. Sometimes that takes the form of new personas that represent fragments of identity. This project is a testimony to the power of the self to heal through the imagination.
I intend for the viewer of my work to walk away with a feeling of hope. If they are in pain, I want them to feel they are not alone in this journey. We all experience hardship and trauma at some point in our lives. The impact of such turmoil is so much stronger when we feel that we are alone in this experience. I create work that is easily relatable and applicable, so that viewers can apply themselves in the work I’ve made and feel what I felt as well.
